Nurse Competency Days: Creation of an Effective Educational Technique for Practicing Nurses
Amanda Ernst
ProQuest LLC, D.N.P. Dissertation, McKendree University
The purpose of this project was to determine best practices when educating nurses, specifically in the form of a competency or skills day. Nurses frequently encounter barriers when attending educational sessions. This project aimed to enhance participation, prevent attendance and retention barriers, and improve the overall comprehension of topics covered during skills days. The project compared in-person nursing skills days with virtual skills days and reported no significant difference between the two options. Virtual learning may be an equally effective method of education for nursing staff, resulting in high levels of satisfaction. Improvements to either method may include expanding topic coverage to standard nursing procedures and using a mixed model in future skills days to enhance delivery and opportunities for hands-on practice. Skills days are an effective educational technique resulting in high levels of satisfaction from nursing staff members.
