Faith L. Swickard
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Evangel University
Online learning continues to grow in popularity each year. Colleges and universities need to provide online students with the same high-quality education that traditionally seated students experience. Course community, collaborations, and interactions provide students with quality educational experiences. This study reviews faculty perspectives regarding a sense of community within an online learning environment within higher education focused on technology using video and social learning platforms. Twenty-five participants were interviewed to share and reflect on their perspectives regarding how video and social learning platforms create a sense of community and belonging within the online learning environment. This study explores faculty perspectives and insight into the importance of a sense of community within the framework of Community of Inquiry (CoI), Transactional Distance Theory, and Social Constructivist Theory. Findings indicated connections, participation, and preparation support a sense of community and collaborations between faculty-students and student-student interactions. Online learning uses a variety of technology tools to support student learning within the course and enhances how a sense of community is experienced within the online learning environment.
