Hope as a Practice among Educational Leaders and Its Impact on Organizational Climate
Sonia T. March
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regent University
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between a principal's level of hope and school climate. Hope is a motivational state of mind that is initiated by setting a goal and sustained by a person's agency and perceived routes that can be or will be used to achieve that goal (Snyder et al., 1991). The National School Climate Council (2007) defined school climate as the "quality and character of school life." This study focused on the quality and character of interactions between teachers and their principal. Specifically, the researcher investigated the likelihood of a relationship between the hope practices of a principal and its impact on the climate of the school among the teacher population. The implications of this study point to the idea that organizational leaders operate in some level of hope and that hope influences those they lead. In education, school principals have a direct impact on teacher attitudes and on their professional performance. This acknowledgement is important when addressing school improvement and student achievement, as studies within the last 20 years show that hope is a mediator between teacher's attitude, teacher behavior, and student achievement (Cohen et al., 2009; Dixson et al., 2017; Magaletta & Oliver, 1999; Schneider, 1990; Shade, 2006). Study participants included principals from a school district in southern Maryland. They completed the Adult Hope Scale, which measures a person's hope levels. A correlation analysis was performed with these hope data and the instructional staff school climate data that were collected from the Maryland School Survey. Findings were analyzed and discussed along with the implications and recommendations for further research.
