Best Practices in College Teaching: A Program Evaluation
Leighann Rechtin
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Kentucky University
In 2012, Northern Kentucky University began offering a Best Practices in College Teaching (BPCT) course. Prior to this program evaluation, the course had not been assessed in any formal manner. The gap in knowledge lies in understanding the unique aspects that the BPCT course offers. The Utilization-Focused Evaluation (UFE) developed by Michael Quinn Patton, a survey and focus groups were the methodologies. A few recommendations were provided, such as more emphasis being placed on student assessment within the course and addressing the time/day the course is offered when it is in person. Overall, the participants mentioned they felt more prepared to teach after taking the course. The benefits reported were significant enough to warrant that the course continue to be offered to new full-time instructors at NKU and that is should be expanded outside of NKU.
