Examining the Experiences of Social Belonging and Campus Integration for Parenting Undergraduates
LaTacia Ruff
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The research topic explores the social belonging experiences of undergraduate student-parents had on college campuses specifically through campus integration practices. This study demonstrated the importance of being acclimated within the campus culture, specifically for student-parents, a marginalized group often unable relate to their childless peers. Given that a sense of belonging is linked to positive mental health, the present study sought to answer how traditional-age undergraduate student-parents described their sense of belonging based on their campus integration experiences. At the time of the interview, participants ranged in age from 20 to 58 years old. Meeting inclusion criteria, participants were pregnant or parenting at least one child while enrolled in an undergraduate program and were between 18 and 23 years old at that time. Using a generic qualitative study approach, thematic analysis with constant comparison was used to analyze the data. Four themes emerged: connected and understood, the necessity of campus support, personal responsibility, and determination despite challenges of intersecting parent and student roles. Future research could focus on the effectiveness of college counseling centers addressing student-parents' complex needs. An additional area of research could learn more about other college-student parents and the impact of their transitions on their sense of belonging (e.g., expanding the age requirements).
