Flipped Academic Advising: An Advising Approach within the Social Work Department at a Regional Comprehensive Four-Year University
John Paul Villavicencio
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
The purpose of this study was to explore whether a flipped classroom approach could be applied to academic advising to further student learning and development. The research questions that guided this study explored how students and advisors experience a flipped advising approach, how students self-reported satisfaction with the flipped advising approach, and whether advisors perceived a flipped advising approach changed engagement between themselves and their advisees. There were two groups of participants at a public, comprehensive, four-year university in the upper Midwest. The first group were three tenured or tenure-track faculty advisors within the social work department who also assisted in the development of the flipped advising approach. The second group comprised thirteen undergraduate students who were 18 years old or older, had earned 24 or more credits, and had declared social work majors advised by the participating faculty advisors. The research design was a concurrent mixed-methods action research design in which data were collected from interviews of three participating advisors and three participating students, along with usage data from the learning management system (LMS) course, and the department's advising survey. The results supported three premises: (a) that the flipped classroom approach can be applied to academic advising; (b) that the approach changed the dynamic of the advising meeting; and (c) that students were satisfied with the advising approach. This approach also encouraged students to be active participants in their advising and advisors to use a constructivist pedagogical framework in advising sessions. I made two recommendations for practitioners and three for researchers. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
