Faculty Response to a Student Death by Suicide: A Phenomenological Study
Holly N. Harmon
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Robert Morris University
Throughout the nation, the rates of death by suicide in the 15-24 age group have continued to rise over the past ten years. In 2016, the National Institute of Mental Health noted that the rates of death by suicide have climbed to 13.7 per 100,000 people in the United States (Mann et al., 2005). The impact of each death by suicide touches the lives of up to 135 people in their social circles and beyond (Cerel et al., 2018). On university campuses, a death by suicide has the potential to affect friends, roommates, classmates, and faculty. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to explore the impact of a student death by suicide on faculty members. The researcher conducted nine semi-structured interviews with faculty members who had lost a student to suicide within the past five years. In response to the research questions, seven primary and five ancillary themes were identified. These themes suggest that faculty members experience responses in parallel with traditional survivors of a death by suicide and that the effects are seen emotionally, interpersonally, and in the classroom. The results and discussion in this study present a prospective framework for future research and recommendations for postvention approaches for faculty members.
