Black Women in Master's Level Counselor Training Programs: Factors Leading to Achievement

Generationally, Black women have faced oppression in both the workplace and academia and the oppression and marginalization suffered by Black women has often been ignored. This research aimed to explore the factors leading to success for Black women in CACREP accredited master's level clinical mental health training programs. Narrative inquiry was used as a means of preserving the voices of Black women. Results outlined the factors leading to success. Further, this study explored the specific behaviors that aided in student retention including interpersonal connection, creation of safe spaces, and program-specific practices. In addition, barriers to achievement were explored. Last, an exploration of both historical and societal factors influencing achievement for Black women was discussed.
