Perceived Barriers to Academic Success among Female African American College Athletes: A Phenomenological Study
Roy Ware
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological investigation was to examine the barriers to academic success experienced by female African American college athletes. In addition, the ways these athletes believed postsecondary institutions could provide better support and resources to ensure academic success were examined. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews with a sample of nine female African American college athletes. The study was guided by the following two research questions: RQ1. Based on their perceived experiences, what barriers to academic success, if any, are experienced by female African American college athletes? RQ2. Based on their lived experiences, in what ways do female African American college athletes believe postsecondary institutions could better support their academic and athletic success?
