Student Perceptions of Accommodations and Services Rendered in Post-Secondary Education
Ciara Phillips
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
Over the years, the number of prospective college students with disabilities enrolling in post-secondary education has increased. Higher education worldwide is now faced with the unprecedented challenges to accommodate these students. Although students with disabilities will find that colleges and universities house service departments that provide assistance, accommodations, and address accessibility to bring about inclusivity, there is a noticeable lack of research addressing how students with disabilities feel about it. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions, beliefs, and experiences of registered students with disabilities in post-secondary institutions in the Midwest regarding accommodations and investigate how departments' follow through to ensure accommodations are meeting desired goals. To increase the literature on students with disabilities in higher education, this study involved reviewing 33 such students with registered disabilities that attend a college or university within a midwestern state. Six of the 33 students were interviewed, and six institutional document reviews were conducted. The results revealed that students with disabilities in higher education institutions are satisfied with college and university offerings of services and accommodations. Despite the provision of legislative mandates, laws, and advocacy groups paving the way for those with disabilities to be given access, resources, and other opportunities previously unheard of in higher education, there is still a long way to go.
