LaCourtney Landfair
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Mississippi College
Many studies have been conducted to determine if graphic organizers are effective instructional tools. However, extensive research has not focused on teachers' perceptions and usage of graphic organizers in the content areas of English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Therefore, this study investigates how middle school teachers perceive the utilization and effectiveness of graphic organizers according to their age, gender, level of education, grade level taught, and years of experience. Data collection and analysis sought to conclude if participating teachers use graphic organizers in their classrooms and how teachers perceive the effectiveness and usage of graphic organizers in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. A descriptive statistical study was conducted utilizing a survey sent to middle school teachers in select Mississippi school districts. Quantitative methods of collecting data were used to measure teachers' attitudes and uses of graphic organizers in their classrooms. Subsequent research topics and recommendations were summarized concerning the usage and effectiveness of middle school teachers' graphic organizers.
