The Impact of Organizational Performance on Perceptions of Transformational Leadership, Shared Governance, and Organizational Leadership Outcomes in HBCUs

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of organizational performance (as assessed by the 2022 "U.S. News & World Report") of HBCUs on the perceptions of presidents' transformational leadership style, organizational outcomes, and shared governance. This research originated from the negative stereotypes about HBCU leadership (Gasman, 2011; Minor, 2004) and the idea that HBCUs are not homogenous. Research questions examined differences in the responses of 97 participants on Perceptions of Shared Governance Inventory (Zhang, 2013), Global Transformational Leadership Scale (Carless, 2000), and Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X (Bass, 1985). Three one-way ANOVAs showed significant differences in transformational leadership, organizational outcomes, and shared governance scores. The findings suggest that high-ranking and medium-ranking institutions demonstrate higher levels of transformational leadership, shared governance, and organizational outcomes than lower-ranked institutions.
