Determining Discouraging Behaviors Women Experience Pursuing STEM Degrees: A Qualitative Study
Marjorie E. Randall
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Women have been discouraged from pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. Women are impacted by this problem by being discriminated against and not being able to advance in college and careers. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine the types and frequency of these discouraging behaviors women experience while pursuing STEM careers. The theoretical framework was based on Vroom's theory of expectancy motivation which was flipped for this purpose as demotivation. A qualitative case study was used. There were six research questions. There were 38 participants. The 38 participants were asked 20 questions on an online survey via SurveyMonkey. The results and themes of the study revealed that a plurality of participants experienced gender harassment, implicit bias, chilly climate, and gender discrimination. A plurality of participants were not exposed to discrimination by a faculty member, race discrimination, sex discrimination, or sexual assault. Most participants were sexually harassed once or twice and experienced gender bias once or twice. The conclusion of this study is that if these behaviors were diminished more women will stay in STEM majors and careers. Recommendations for future research would be to find out how many women along racial lines are experiencing these discouraging behaviors.
