Empowering Latino Parental Engagement: A Narrative Inquiry
Eric Jason Apgar
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
The purpose if this study was to identify the primary benefits of parental engagement, obstacles to parental engagement, and best practices for educational leaders to increase the quality of programming for Latino families to actively engage in the educational experiences of their children. Research indicates that over the past few decades, studies surrounding the academic achievement of Latino children has been of central focus to policymakers, researchers, and administrators due to an evidenced achievement gap between Latino students and their White peers. Additionally, Latino immigrant youth who experience lower levels of parental involvement and greater levels financial strain are more likely to experience academic difficulties. Many schools struggle to develop and implement an active and comprehensive parental engagement policy (Gandara & Contreras, 2009). Rowan-Kenyon et al. (2008) claimed that parental engagement varies with cultural and socioeconomic factors and suggested that barriers to this engagement were not so much attributable to shortcomings of parents themselves, but rather to the educational structures and policies that confront them. The results of this study indicate that second-generation Latinos face more barriers than first generation immigrants in the United States due to greater understanding of the educational system and a greater awareness of implicit bias.
