The Work-Life Balance of Women Leaders in Higher Education: A Generational Study
Cynthia Jill Gasaway
ProQuest LLC, D.B.A. Dissertation, Argosy University, Denver
Over 85% of working women leaders in higher education state that they work more than 48 hours in the normal work week and almost a quarter of them feel unable to cope with the pressure and stress in their daily jobs. The need to continue working at home after formal work hours may be creating a negative impact on the employees and their families. Work-life balance is the management of responsibilities at the workplace, and the balance of families and private lives away from the work environment. This phenomenological study included the work-family border theory and the generational theory to guide and understand the perceptions of work-life balance. This research focused on three generations: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y women in leadership roles in the for-profit higher education industry. The significance of the study was designed to increase the understanding of the generational viewpoint, how they cope, their feelings of stress as a leader in proprietary higher education, including the similarities and differences of the generations on the subject of work-life balance.
