Parents of children with ASD need access to a variety of services, resources, and parental knowledge to best meet the needs of their children. The lack of access to supportive services and resources in rural communities creates challenges for parents of children with ASD. The challenges of rural America can cause stress, impact familial relationships, and make it difficult to provide adequate support. Support groups may be a possible solution to this problem. The purpose of this evaluation was to determine the extent to which a community-based autism support group in a rural community improved the quality of life for participants, who are mostly parents, through resources and support. The evaluation used a sequential explanatory mixed methods design with a quantitative survey and two focus groups to allow for the data to be expanded. The results indicated that parents of children with ASD who participated in the support group reported lower stress levels, an impact on familial relationships, an increase in access to resources, and a positive impact on their understanding of ASD. The themes discovered in the thematic analysis were All in the Family, Value in Others, Observational Learning. Recommendations for future research and school improvement included: how to provide opportunities for parents to participate in observational learning, strategies for increasing access to resources, and how schools can be supportive of parents of children with ASD.
