Adolescents' Experience in Empathy Education: A Phenomenological Study

Increasingly, empathy is a topic of discussion and instruction. Often used as a synonym to describe the socially acceptable and friendly behaviors we want to see more of in our society and specifically among adolescents, empathy is being used as a catchall phrase, confusing efforts to teach people how to choose empathetic behaviors. Adolescents are the least studied population in empathy education. At the same time teachers are being called on to teach empathy. In an education system that is standards-based and data driven, teachers and students deserve identified best practices in empathy education. This phenomenological study examines adolescents' experience in empathy education. Understanding adolescents' experience of learning about empathy education will allow educators to begin to identify best practices in empathy education so that adolescents leave our classrooms both knowing what empathy is and choosing empathetic behaviors.
