The Transformational Leadership Style of Underrepresented Women Headteachers in England

ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The University of North Carolina at Wilmington
Transformational leadership research has always been viewed with the cisgender white male in mind. Very limited transformational leadership studies are available regarding underrepresented women who are in the racial or ethnic minority, LGBTQIA+, religious minority, and/or have disabilities. This research examines how underrepresented women headteachers in England share their experiences as transformational leaders. This qualitative interview study was conducted using semi-structured interviews to describe six women's journeys into the headship as well as share their transformational leadership experiences using Aviolo and Bass' (2002) components of idealized influence, individual consideration, intellectual stimulation, and inspirational motivation. Thematic analyses were conducted with data gathered from underrepresented headteachers in England who met the criteria for this study. The four emergent themes were (a) critical influences from my life's journey, (b) the power of transformational leadership in action, (c) ever-present challenges, and (d) paying it forward.
