Examining Experiential Learning of Equine Students in Postsecondary Institutions
Jenna T. Malnar
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Since 1984, many animal science postsecondary institutions had incorporated experiential learning into courses and programs, including equine programs. Even with the incorporated experiential learning, equine experts were finding students postgraduation were substandard with equine technical skills experiences. Although many studies had addressed equine programs' experiential learning benefits with surveys and pre- and posttesting, there remained a gap in the research on technical skills experiences of postsecondary equine students. This dissertation research study explored the experiential learning of equine technical skills for students in postsecondary education, especially related to collecting vital signs and correctly tying a horse. The research question was: "How do students describe their experiential learning with equine technical skills, specifically related to collecting vital signs and correctly tying a horse?" The study design was basic qualitative; focusing on exploring the experiences of current postsecondary equine science students in the United States who had completed a hands-on equine course with a "C" or 70% in the course or better. The data collected through interviews and an online questionnaire were analyzed using a thematic approach to identify themes across the data. Open and axial coding found that the majority of the participants describe their experiential learning with three components: lecture, practice, and test. The participants' descriptions of hands-on experiential learning with collecting vital signs and correctly tying a horse was summarized by first attending lectures accompanied with PowerPoint presentations or handouts, followed by hands-on practice, and ending with practical and written tests.
