The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to understand the influence that mentoring has on the wellness of African American doctoral alumni of counselor education programs who took part in White mentorship. The gap within the literature consists of two major components: the lack of empirical data that displays the lived experiences of African Americans' doctoral journey in the discipline of counselor education; understanding the connection, and the influence mentorship can have on the wellness of doctoral students. This study consisted of seven African American women who graduated from doctoral counselor education programs and attend predominantly white institutions. All of the participants who took part in this study were alumni. This was done to gain a reflective perspective on their experiences and to create a space for the participants to share how their doctoral journey influenced who they currently mentor others. The analysis of the transcribed data resulted in four core themes: racial validation, navigation, rapport, and I see you. These themes demonstrated the importance of mentoring and being validated had on the participants. Their mentoring experiences did influence the wellness, their ability to cope, and how they currently mentor their mentees as counselor educators.
