A leader who possesses transformational characteristics has the capacity to "feel the pulse" of followers and respond in a manner that nurtures freedom of creativity and creates a culture of engagement and inventiveness that benefits an institution (Burns, 1978). In the education field, this type of leader tends to positively impact school culture by cultivating an environment in which personnel are poised to be innovative and take risks (Northouse, 2018). In this mixed methods study, the researchers examine transformational practices which include the qualities of idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, idealized behaviors, and inspirational motivation as they impact elementary school culture from the perspective of principals, teachers, and students. In five purposively selected exemplary schools, principals were identified as possessing transformational leadership characteristics; survey results from these schools' principals, teachers, and students consistently reveal positive views of their school's culture. Follow-up teacher and student focus group interviews corroborate the survey findings. In the interviews, the researchers identify consensus that a school leader who uses transformational practices to build a positive school culture through valuing teacher and student voice gains buy-in from all these stakeholders groups. The researchers conclude that the principals studied in these five schools have demonstrated transformational leadership characteristics, with their teachers internalizing the impact of that leadership. This causes a beneficial, trickle-down effect at the student level. Offered are implications for elementary school leaders as well as potential future avenues of research, with a particular focus on student voice and positive school culture.
