Science Teachers' Perceptions of the Effectiveness and Implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards
Kristen Casale Mallet
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, College of Saint Elizabeth
Throughout the years, there has been a reduction of graduates entering and pursuing careers within the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) fields. Thus, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), now called the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science (NJSLS-S) developed a rigorous program of standards for students to develop their skills to compete in an ever-changing, competitive global economy. There are factors that need to be considered in regards to the implementation of the standards in teachers' day-to-day practices, such as appropriate scaffolding for scientific skills and problem-based learning, as well as the perceived barriers to implementing the NGSS. These areas will be discussed in detail as related to the NGSS. This paper will analyze how the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are implemented, so educators can encourage enhanced skills for STEM education and careers.
