Culturally Appropriate Math Problem Solving Instruction for Students with Autism
Carla Luevano
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, University of Cincinnati
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of culturally appropriate problem-solving instruction (CAPSI) for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Intervention elements incorporated within CAPSI included schema instruction, video modeling, a task analysis, and vocabulary instruction. Information from a culture and preference assessment was also used to individualize practice word problems and reinforcement procedures. Four students attending an urban high school providing specialized instruction for individuals with ASD were included in this study. Results were obtained from a weekly word problem solving probe consisting of nine word problems (i.e., three of each word problem type taught during CAPSI) and a pre-post vocabulary measure consisting of 15 items. Data were analyzed using a multiple baseline design across three problem types for each participant. Results demonstrated improvements across all word problem types for each participant and decreases in vocabulary scores for all participants according to a post-test measure.
