Complex Noun Groups in EdD and PhD Dissertations
Elena A. Toselli
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Holy Family University
The focus of the present study is the use of complex noun groups, in the dissertations written 100 EdD and 100 PhD degrees in educational leadership. Four research questions were investigated: Research Question 1: What, if any, differences exist in the frequency of attributive adjectives that function as noun modifiers in the corpora of PhD and EdD dissertations? Research Question 2: What, if any, differences exist in the frequency of nouns that function as noun pre-modifiers in the corpora of PhD and EdD dissertations? Research Question 3: What, if any, differences exist in the frequency of total prepositional phrases that function as noun postmodifiers in the corpora of PhD and EdD dissertations? Research Question 4: What, if any, differences exist in the frequency of individual prepositional phrases that function as noun postmodifiers in the corpora of PhD and EdD dissertations? A. "Of" as a postmodifier B. "In" as a postmodifier C. "With" as a postmodifier D. "For" as a postmodifier As the data was not normal, comparison between the two sets of dissertations were made using a series of Mann Whitney tests. It was concluded that there were few meaningful differences in the use of complex noun groups between the EdD and PhD dissertations, suggesting that there were few differences in the purposes, rigor, and value of the two degrees, which is consistent with previous research, though it is often believed that the EdD is a practitioner's degree, and the PhD is a research degree.
