"It Was Like I Was Invisible:" Women Adjuncts Teaching English
Heather Roberts
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana State University
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of female contingent faculty members teaching off the tenure track in English. A qualitative research design, specifically a phenomenological approach, was used to collect data and analyze emergent themes to answer two research questions: What are the experiences of female adjuncts teaching in English? How do female adjuncts feel about their non-tenure status? Six participants were selected using a purposeful sampling technique. The participants were interviewed via Zoom, with each interview lasting between one and two hours. The themes that emerged from data analysis included the Covid-19 pandemic, freedom versus constraints in teaching, the effects of being contingent, relationships with colleagues, and looking forward. Participants were motivated by social justice issues to transform their curriculums and concerned about students' abilities to readjust to traditional expectations for behavior after the Covid-19 pandemic. Finally, participants were often dismissive of tenure and interested in other avenues for career advancement.
