School Counselors' Experiences with Career Counseling Curriculum: A Phenomenological Study
Jill Faber
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Louisiana at Monroe
School counselors provide academic, social-emotional, and college/career guidance to students. Due to school counselors having to do more with less, it is important to understand how career counseling curricula fits into school counseling programs. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore high school counselors' perceptions of their experiences with career counseling curricula and compare those experiences to the behavior standards set forth by ASCA to bridge the gap between perceptions, expectations, and reality. For this study, nine practicing high school counselors from across America shared their insights. This descriptive phenomenological study sought to answer these questions: What are high school counselors' current experiences with career counseling curriculum in their high schools? How do school counselors' experiences with career counseling curriculum compare to ASCA's behavior standards for school counselors? The findings from this study suggested that school counselors' experiences with career counseling curriculum were minimal and that these experiences with career counseling curricula did not align with ASCA standards. Future directions were discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
