The Rey Complex Figure Test as a Measure of Effort in Neuropsychological Assessment
Wah-Mei Kodimer
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
The purpose of the proposed study is to add to the literature regarding the assessment of effort and malingering in the field of neuropsychology using the Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT). The majority of the literature on this measure has been in the specific areas for which the instrument was developed, namely those of visual spatial and immediate/short term memory functions. The more recent development of the Recognition Trial of the RCFT began to examine features of effort. The present study will potentially expand the previous studies and test development of the RCFT as it examines several features of the test as an effort measurement instrument to assess effort and malingering amongst examinees. A particular advantage of positive findings in this study would be the ability to use the instrument in its traditional form with the added feature of being an embedded (not requiring the development of an additional measurement instruments) to assess effort/malingering functions. Hypothesis testing will examine variance between two groups (persons with acquired brain injury vs. persons intentionally feigning/exaggerating cognitive problems) in terms of differences in the various aspects of the test protocol: copying a figure, immediate and delayed recall, in terms of irregularities of figure drawing, organization, and retention. Additional tests of effort (the 15-item memory test (FIT) and the ACT word choice test) will also be utilized to test the effort hypothesis in terms of consistency of effort performance specifically with effort-memory areas, verbal and visual. Positive findings in the hypothesized areas will potentially lead to additional research with the RCFT as an embedded test of effort/malingering, and ultimately the development and expansion of the test to a significant measure of effort and malingering.
