Navigating the Multi-Tiered System of Supports for Students with Anxiety Disorders: A School Psychologist Resource Guide

ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health disorders in children and adolescents. Anxiety is associated with impairment and interferences across a myriad of domains, including social and emotional functioning, academic achievement, and peer and adult relationships. It is important to consider and understand how anxiety manifests within the school environment and the unique difficulties that children and adolescents with anxiety may experience. This dissertation provides a review of anxiety disorders that are most likely to cause difficulties within the school setting, which include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (social phobia) and separation anxiety disorder (SAD). Given the prevalence of anxiety disorders in today's youth, it provides school practitioners with a resource guide for best practices when screening and assessing a student for anxiety through a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework. Finally, recommendations for the school setting are offered that incorporate multimodal interventions within a MTSS framework.
