Psychology Trainees' Knowledge and Perceptions of Psychopathy Compared to the General Public
Amanda Genine Connerton
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by affective, interpersonal, and behavioral features. While research has been conducted to understand the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes that laypersons and mental health professionals have of psychopathy, there is no research involving graduate trainees. This dearth of information is problematic given that while in their training, there is a likelihood that trainees will encounter a psychopathic individual at some point. It is important to have a better understanding of what trainees know about psychopathy, as this could provide information on whether or not they are receiving adequate training on the construct. Using the "Universal Protocol for Conducting Prototypicality Studies Using the Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality," a quantitative research study was done to assess the characteristics participants felt were prototypical of psychopathy. First-year trainees, fourth-year trainees, and members of the general public were surveyed. Results indicated that there did not appear to be a significant different in how trainees and non-trainees rated the prototypicality of psychopathy characteristics. Further research recommendations have been made including soliciting more participants and gaining more information on trainee exposure to psychopathy.
