A Comprehensive Review of Response to Intervention in a Small Rural High School
David M. Haug
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Missouri Baptist University
This quantitative study examined the impact of the use of Response to Intervention (RTI) on student performance at a small rural high school. The strength of RTI is the identification of student need and the weakness is the lack of consistent application of interventions. The problem this study addressed was low student performance as defined by discipline data, academic data, and attendance data. The school leadership team through the use of RTI eliminated in-school suspension, addressed discipline issues with a character education program, and provided an academic intervention centered on improving reading skills. This comprehensive review of RTI in a small rural high school reviewed building-wide student data related to discipline referrals, attendance, and grade point average over an eight-year period. The researcher discussed the results of the study to see if the application of RTI had a significant impact on building-wide student data. The recommendation for future study could include a qualitative study of students and teachers as part of the remediation process and a mixed-methods study of student performance related to middle school.
