School Counselor Effects on Ninth Grade On-Track Data for At-Risk Students
Jaclyn Lewis
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
The purpose of this quasi-experimental, ex post facto study was to examine the effectiveness of school counselor check-ins on ninth grade on-track data, focusing primarily on at-risk students during the first semester of their freshman year. This study was designed to measure the effect school counselor check-ins delivered three times during the first semester on students identified as at-risk students had on freshman on-track data compared to other freshman students. Credits earned after two semesters of high school and core courses failed determined if a student was on-track or off-track. Two research questions were used to measure and determine the effectiveness of this study on freshman on-track as well as subgroups of students based on characteristics. There were statistically significant differences, with large or medium effect, between total credits earned, core classes failed, dean behavioral referrals, and school days absent by students who did not receive additional check-ins by school counselors and those who did. Data from this study support statistically significant associations seen with the characteristics of gender, economic status, and IEPs; of these, data supported economic status had a large effect and IEPs had a medium effect. More research needs to be completed with a pre-identified at-risk control group instead of comparing at-risk students with others.
