"This Is Church…We Are All Priests": The Role of the Peer Group Mentorship Community in the Professional Lives of Women of Color Higher Education Administrators
Kenya Nyota Lee
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Women of color higher education administrators face various challenges within their respective institutional culture while in pursuit of career success and advancement. This study focused on understanding the experiences of women of color higher education administrators: the challenges that hinder and facilitators of their career success and advancement; and the role of peer group mentorship in facilitating their professional journeys. The data collected from participants in Cycle One consisted of focus groups and post-focus group one-on-one interviews with women of color higher education administrators. An action step was designed, implemented, and evaluated in Cycle Two of the research project to determine the role of a peer group mentorship community in assisting the women of color higher education administrators in navigating their professional experiences and achieving career success. The study concluded that women of color face various challenges within their institutional culture and they desire a safe space to affirm their shared lived experiences, to find fellowship and to utilize their collective experiences as a developmental resource within a community structure that would address their evolving and emerging needs. This action research study has created the foundation of a peer group mentorship community for women of color higher education administrators in the Northeast region of the United States.
