Servant Leadership in Faith Based Organizations: A Comparative Study of Male and Female Leaders
Lucille Fanniel
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to determine if and to what extent male and female faith-based organization (FBO) leaders in the United States differed in their servant leadership attributes of altruistic calling, emotional healing, organizational stewardship, persuasive mapping, and wisdom. Servant leadership theory and the social role theory of leadership provided the theoretical guidance for the study. A national convenience sample of FBO leaders (n = 161; 54% female, 46% males) completed an online survey comprised of demographic questions and the Servant Leadership Questionnaire-Self Report (SLQ-SR). The study had five research questions, and hypothesis testing was conducted using independent samples t-tests. Results from this study showed that male and female FBO leaders did not statistically significantly differ in altruistic calling, emotional healing, organizational stewardship, persuasive mapping, and wisdom. Study findings have implications for practice and future research concerning both secular and faith-driven organizations.
