Understanding Declining International Graduate Student Yield at Private University
Marissa A. Brush
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The purpose of this Action Research study is to understand and stop the decline of international graduate student yield for graduate admissions professionals at Private University. Declining yield is defined as the decreasing rate of admitted students who choose to enroll in Private University despite their acceptance. Knowledge generated in this study is expected to inform the strategies that graduate admissions professionals use to encourage international graduate students to enroll. Participants in Cycle were graduate admissions leaders at Private University from the colleges with the largest enrollment of international students. Data collected in Cycle 1 came from semi-structured interviews with these leaders. In Cycle 2, an action step was implemented based on the themes presented in Cycle 1 and was evaluated in Cycle 2 to stop the decline of international graduate student yield. This action step saw the creation of a four-step communication plan for admitted graduate international students launched to admitted students most vulnerable to completing their studies elsewhere. The communication plan consists of collaboration with community partners, as the data in Cycle 1 showed their importance. The findings of this study include the following. Strategic planning is a successful way to engage the audience. Videos and communication from the community do influence student decision-making. Engagement from the community encourages students to enroll. The rate of yield remained flat despite the positive influences from the campaign. Implications for the organization include new knowledge that new strategic risks can and should be taken, how information is presented as necessary as the information, and that analytics should continue to help make data-driven decisions. Recommendations from the study include consistently adapting marketing campaigns with new information, constantly conducting further research to assist student decision-making, and always working with community partners and getting their buy-in for strategies.
