Talk Aloud Problem Solving for BACB Exam Preparation
Rebekah N. Lee
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Endicott College
The current study investigates Talk Aloud Problem Solving (TAPS) for master's level students at Endicott College in preparation for the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB) exam. The exam format of multiple-choice questions was used as the basis for acquisition and utilization of a TAPS skill repertoire. The purpose was to add to the continued development of Endicott College's BACB preparation program as it is continually updated to meet the evolving needs of its students. Giving students the option to learn a TAPS repertoire may be an excellent personalized intervention for those identified as having weak problem-solving and/or test-taking skills. During the exam, all decision making and problem solving must be generated by the candidate without the benefit of collegial or mentor-based verbal feedback. Teaching students to build a TAPS repertoire was one way to impact students' overall understanding and application of the behavior analytic content. The results of this study demonstrated an increase in posttest scores for all participants over pretest ranging from 5% to 35%, which for three of the six participants represented the difference between failure and passing. Implications for mastery of behavior analytic content and exam preparedness are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
