An Action Research Study on the Impact That Alternative High Schools Have on Black Graduation Rates
Nathan Linwood Brown Jr.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Regent University
This professional practice dissertation is an action research study that examined the impact alternative high school programs (AHSPs) have on the graduation rates of Black students who attend these programs. Data were gathered through the use of surveys, interviews, a focus group, and an expert panel that incorporated feedback from students, parents, teachers, and administrators who have had experiences in an AHSP. The triangulation of this information furthered the credibility of the research. With the use of NVivo software, common themes regarding specific characteristics of the AHSP that study participants believe improved graduation rates for Black students were identified. The common themes that surfaced from the disaggregation of the data regarding AHSP's impact on Black graduation rates were (a) benefits of AHSP--Relationships and Support, (b) administration and staff training--social-emotional learning as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion focus, (c) positive promotion--central office and administration, (d) increased resources and community outreach, and (e) program and curriculum expansion. The information that was uncovered within the qualitative study can lend itself to assist state- and district-level educational leaders to reconsider how school divisions are utilizing their AHSPs to provide services to underserved students. Students of color may benefit from an AHSP as well as gain skills that can contribute to the generational changes needed in many Black communities. The executive summary concisely outlines the action research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
