Attitudes and Practice Behaviors Regarding Psychopharmacology among Graduate Student Therapists
Michael Feinstein
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Little research has been conducted on the attitudes and clinical practice behaviors of therapists in relation to psychotropic medication, and no literature could be found on this relationship among graduate student therapists, specifically. To address the gap in the literature, quantitative methodology procedures were used in this study to measure the graduate student therapists' personal characteristics, practice behaviors, attitudes toward psychotropic medications. The final study consisted of 103 graduate student therapists across PsyD, PhD, and master's-level programs. A logistical regression was conducted, and results revealed that attitudes about psychotropic medication is a significant predictor in the decision to refer a client for medication evaluation. In particular, the results demonstrated that, for every increase in negative attitude, the odds of choosing to refer decreases by about 10%. Additional post hoc analyses were conducted to compare various personal characteristic variables to attitudes about psychotropic medication use. Results indicated that gender, ethnicity, and comfortability level were statistically significant factors that predicted attitudes about psychotropic medications. This study demonstrates the importance of addressing personal attitudes about psychopharmacology in graduate student courses, as these attitudes can directly impact client care.
