Sara JoAnn Sanchez
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of general education 11th -grade Language Arts teachers on educational benefit for students with disabilities. The study utilized a qualitative phenomenological methodology to explore the perspective of general education educators in providing students with disabilities sufficient educational benefit in accordance with FAPE. The main source of data that was utilized in this research study was semi-structured interviews. Interviews with open-ended questions were conducted with each of the 15 participants to identify perception of educational benefit for students with disabilities. Participant responses indicated challenges faced in implementing practices and supports needed to address challenges when implementing IEP accommodations and modifications. Additionally, responses indicated that general education teachers have a lack of knowledge in special education legal requirements that translate into educational practices, and that this may have a correlation with the struggles that general education teachers have in providing educational benefit in the general education classroom. The top perceived best practices included student-led methods, including student engagement, student self-efficacy, and student self-advocacy. The top challenges identified in the research included time for collaboration, varied trainings needed for general education teachers, creating differentiated instruction with limited support, and high population of students with disabilities in general education classrooms. General education teachers reported that they needed support with developing multiple accommodations and modifications for the various disabilities they encounter in the classroom and felt that they were not well supported with collaboration and professional development. The information collected from the interviews provides an understanding of general education teachers' perception of the role they have in providing educational benefit to students with disabilities.
