A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Exploring African American Students' Experience of Racial Bias in Higher Education

The focus of this study was to implement a qualitative study exploring African American Students' experience of racial bias in higher education. The problem addressed by this study was that racial bias on college campuses has a negative impact on the African American students' academic performance as well as their pursuance of other educational opportunities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the racial bias that African American students face in higher education and its negative effect on their academic journey as well as in post-graduation opportunities. The results of this study advanced the guiding theoretical framework by contributing the lived experiences of these African American students of racial bias and gave a better framework of what to look for when studying this topic. A qualitative methodology was selected to explore the racial bias experiences of African Americans who graduated from a four-year university within the past seven years in the Northeastern part of the United States. Phenomenological research design was chosen for this research to help understand the lived experiences of African Americans students in higher education. The targeted population for racial bias experiences of African American students in higher education of this study were African American students who graduated from a four year university within the past seven years in the Northeastern part of the United States and the target size was 12. The themes of this researched showed that racial bias in higher education existed in the participants experience. This study revealed issues of students emotionally developing in higher education within their academic journey. The results of this study showed that nine out of 10 participants experienced some level of racial bias in higher education in which had a negative effect in their academic performance and them wanting to pursue academic goals.
