HEOP Study Abroad: Opportunities and Barriers
Abigail W. Cavazos
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
The purpose of this Action Research study was to investigate attitudes and barriers related to study abroad by Higher Education Opportunity Students (HEOP) students at 'XYZ' College to strengthen and improve access to study abroad for this student population, and to ultimately increase the numbers of HEOP students who study abroad at 'XYZ' College. In this research study, students from the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at a small private college in New York state were interviewed about their attitudes, perceptions, and barriers surrounding studying abroad. Initial results showed that while attitudes about study abroad were overwhelmingly positive among HEOP students, clear barriers existed to study abroad for this student population. The major barriers identified from this research included finances, family, process confusion, and hesitation for students to go "out of their comfort zone". Action steps for a HEOP study abroad workshop series and mentor program were designed and implemented, then evaluated during the second cycle of research. The workshop series consisted of three 1 hour-long workshops designed to address the barriers found in the first cycle of research. The series was then evaluated by both HEOP students and staff through field observations, analytic memos, interviews, and surveys. This study revealed that a detailed workshop series geared towards the various study abroad barriers facing HEOP students could help to better inform students about such opportunities, which could impact their decision-making process about participation in semester-long study abroad in the future. Implications for the institution included better study abroad inclusion efforts for HEOP students and a sustainable workshop program that can continue to support and encourage this student population to pursue semester-long study abroad opportunities.
