A Qualitative Investigation of Protective Factors of Black Male College Graduates with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

College students with ADHD no matter their gender or ethnicity are at significantly higher failing post-secondary education. Coincidentally Black men in college have a significantly higher risk Of falling short of post-secondary academic success. Black men in college who also have ADHD appear to be even more at risk, yet some find academic success. This qualitative study aimed to shed light on the protective factors of Black men with ADHD who graduated from college. This study utilized a non-experimental qualitative research design to interview six participants for data analysis and identification of themes. Protective factors identified by the participants surrounded themes such as receiving social support, receiving mental health services, utilizing academic accommodations, attaining organization skills, and developing self-motivation. These findings are in line with previous studies that looked into different aspects of this population. Lastly, this study discusses research implications and considerations for practicing in a multicultural society.
