Navigating the Glass Cliff Phenomenon as Black Women in Senior Administration in Higher Education
Kinya Chandler
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Peter's University
This qualitative study investigates the glass cliff phenomenon in relation to Black women in senior administration in higher education. This research explores the motivation of Black women who accept these roles and the ways in which they use of different types of cultural capital to navigate these positions. Using data drawn from the interviews of six Black women in senior leadership positions for at least one year, this study advances our understanding of how Yosso's theory of Community Cultural Wealth applies to glass cliff appointments in higher education. The findings from the research provide support for the key arguments. The results, implications for managers, and future research are discussed as well. This study also adds to the small pool of literature on both the glass cliff phenomenon and cultural wealth in higher education leadership.
