The Impacts of PBIS on High School Attendance

Most school districts across the United States face the challenge of chronic absenteeism among their student populations as a barrier to appropriate delivery of the educational process. Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS), is a research-based system designed to target and improve undesirable student behaviors. This quantitative study examined the potential impact of PBIS on the attendance patterns of high school students. It was conducted in Ohio, in a suburban high school comprised of approximately 950 students. The study consisted of two components: aggregated and disaggregated student attendance data relevant to the school year before the implementation of PBIS, and the school year after the implementation of PBIS. The aggregate data examined whether there was a statistically significant difference between the number of days of absence for high school students before and after the implementation of positive behavior interventions. The disaggregated data sets examined whether a statistically significant difference existed for each of the student subgroups pertaining to free and reduced lunch status, gender, and race. The study yielded mixed results. The aggregate student group and each of the subgroups consisting of male, female, white students and students of color demonstrated no statistically significant difference. The subgroups consisting of students who qualified for free and reduced lunch status and the subgroup consisting of students who did not qualify for free and reduced lunch status both demonstrated statically significant differences. The only student subgroup that yielded results in alignment with the intended result to decrease the number of days of absence as a result of the implementation of PBIS interventions, was the subgroup consisting of students who qualified for free and reduced lunch status.
