Use of Narrative Therapy and Art Therapy in Participatory Action Research to Address Bullying and Foster Hope for School Communities
Tanya Alexander
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Texas Wesleyan University
This dissertation explores the effectiveness of both narrative therapy and art therapy practices incorporated into a participatory action research (PAR) project to foster alternate stories of hope in addressing bullying and other aggressive actions. Results indicate that narrative therapy, when incorporated into a PAR design, can assist with the facilitation of stories of hope. The primary themes which emerged through collaborative conversations with the participants, as well as the co-construction of new narratives, focused on fostering positive connections between counselors, parents, and children and to nature. Art therapy, when combined with narrative practices, enhanced the exploration of stories of hope. Themes of connection to nature, to others, to self, and to diversity, as well as the power of positivity in creating safe learning atmospheres, emerged.
