Unmute Yourself: An Exploratory Qualitative Study Examining the Virtual Internship Experiences of College Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic
La-Dana Renee Jenkins
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New Jersey City University
Since March 2020, traditional in-person internship programs in the United States have been turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Colleges and universities were forced and later saw the need to provide students with options outside of the traditional internship format such as virtual internships. The purpose of this exploratory qualitative research study was to examine college students' perceptions of and experiences with participating in a virtual internship during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants in this study were recent college graduates, undergraduate and graduate, who completed a virtual internship in the United States during the Spring, Summer, or Fall semesters of 2020, 2021, or 2022. The data were collected by conducting 20 semistructured individual Zoom interviews. The findings produced several themes highlighting the virtual internship experiences of students including the advantages and disadvantages, technology impact, and modality preferences. Based upon the findings from this research study, recommendations were made for higher education institutions and employers when designing and implementing a virtual internship program.
