Overcoming Career Challenges in Women of Color
John A. Corona
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how women of color college leaders born in the U.S. describe the influence of resiliency in overcoming challenges in their career. It was not known how women of color college leaders born in the U.S. describe the influence of resiliency in overcoming challenges in their career. The theoretical foundations that guided this study included resiliency and intersectionality. One research question guided this study. Twelve women of color college leaders born in the U.S. participated in the individual interviews and four participated in one focus group. There was also an open-ended questionnaire completed. These were the three sources of data. This was a qualitative descriptive design study. Data were hand coded and categorized into initial themes and themes and reviewed using NVivo software. Fourteen initial themes and four themes emerged: Theme (1) Dealing with Imposter Syndrome, Theme (2) Resiliency as dynamic interplay of personal strengths, Theme (3) Supportive relationship, and Theme (4) Adaptive coping strategies in navigating and overcoming career challenges. The findings that women of color college leaders born in the U.S. were validated as they were able to identify times when resiliency helped overcome challenges in their career. Participants described a need for resiliency especially during the onset of Imposter Syndrome and iterated the importance of dynamic interplay of personal strengths, supportive relationships, and adaptive coping strategies. The conclusion and recommendations for future studies of women of color college leaders born in the U.S. who described the influence of resiliency to overcome challenges in their career, could expand on the knowledge obtained in this study.
