ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
This qualitative dissertation explored the barriers and self-efficacy of Black first-generation college (FGC) students from low socioeconomic areas of South Los Angeles, California. The information presented explored their hurdles and how their self-efficacy affects their capacity to acquire a college degree. An FGC student is someone whose parents did not attend college. I utilized a qualitative study by interviewing 15 participants. The participants were attending a four-year university and had completed at least one semester or graduated with a four-year degree. I used Albert Bandura's self-efficacy model to develop the research questions. This dissertation provided practical implications to improve educational experiences for Black FGC students from low-income areas to promote educational equity.
