Family Expert: Surveying Family Perception to Increase the Effectiveness of Individual Education Program (IEP) Implementation
Sarah Edwards
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, University of Colorado at Denver
The Family Expert Survey aims to provide school psychologists and other school-based mental health professionals with a research-based data collection tool that focuses on family perception of, and satisfaction with, the current IEP procedures that are in place. At its core, this survey's focus is to provide a low cost, valid way to collect data that can be used to improve the school-based IEP team's competency in supporting students from minoritized backgrounds. There were 69 respondents from Colorado who completed all parts of this survey between September 2021 and October 2021. The findings show that there may be more barriers for families--especially those who are minoritized--to successfully engage with the IEP process. It is especially noteworthy that 72.5% of respondents believe that they would have liked to be provided with more information during IEP meetings.
