Customized Employment: Measuring the Efficacy, Staff Insight and Experiences of a Vocational Program in a Rural Town in the Southeast
Shaun Lewis
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of West Georgia
The purpose of the research was to utilize strengths-based programming evaluation methods to measure the efficacy of the Customized Employment Model administered by staff for individuals with mild to moderate disabilities at two Vocational Rehabilitation Programs in southeast Georgia. Also, the purpose was to review the staff's perception of any newly acquired strengths, skills, or abilities of individuals with mild to moderate disabilities following the Customized Employment Process. The study has been guided by Gottfredson's (1981) Circumscription and Compromise theory, which posits that job goals are an image of a person's self-concept. This study was conducted using the CIPP Model to analyze the program by evaluating the effectiveness of a strengths-based assessment training in a rural town in the Southeast. Qualitative data was collected through interviews with key stakeholders to address the research questions. Soon after data collection, the stakeholders were then asked to evaluate the strengths-based assessment training. This data was analyzed in form of Qualitative Content Analysis and descriptive results were formulated to conclude the study. The results of the study indicated that CE had shown promising growth for individuals with disabilities, such as employment placement in a conducive environment, leading to long-term employment and discussed the importance of Discovery in CE. Finally, the overall recommendation for counselors/vocational centers working with individuals with disabilities is implementing Customized Employment as a universal phenomenon in employment services.
