Examining the Relationship between Secondary Career and Technical Education, School Satisfaction, and Future Employability for African American Males
Ashley Barrett
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Southern Wesleyan University
Career and Technical Education (CTE) has evolved since its implementation in American classrooms. By design, students are able to develop practical skills that are expected to enhance their future employment opportunities when enrolled in CTE courses. As advanced as the programs have become, doubt still exists in program design and usefulness, especially for minority students. The short and long-term impact and expense of the discrepancies between benefiting demographics may warrant the further study of the impact of CTE participation on African American males. Using a mixed-methods approach, the researcher used multiple sources of data to collect information related to minority male participation in CTE, and evaluated the immediate impact on school satisfaction and attendance. The researcher examined if CTE's practical application increases employment opportunities once in the workforce. Measuring the short-term impact and ramifications for enrollment in CTE programming provide local and state government with insight to rectify discrepancies so every demographic may benefit from career and technical training.
